About dan modern chinese - pasadena

Nestled in the heart of Pasadena at 146 S Lake Ave #105, Dan Modern Chinese reimagines traditional Chinese culinary artistry through a contemporary lens. Since its 2018 debut, this mid-century modern eatery has carved a niche with its meticulous approach to time-honored dishes, offering a curated menu that prioritizes craftsmanship over quantity. The space—adorned with clean lines, warm woods, and minimalist decor—creates an inviting atmosphere where diners can savor handcrafted dumplings, wok-fired noodles, and vibrant vegetable dishes without the sensory overload of sprawling menus typical in the San Gabriel Valley’s Chinese dining scene.

At the core of Dan’s philosophy lies an unwavering commitment to precision. Owner James Kim channels decades of culinary heritage into every xiao long bao, ensuring each delicate pouch bursts with rich, savory broth—a signature offering that has positioned the restaurant as a contender in Southern California’s competitive soup dumpling landscape. The kitchen’s rhythm revolves around fresh, high-quality ingredients transformed through techniques like hand-pulled noodles and carefully calibrated steaming processes. This dedication extends beyond dumplings to dishes like dan dan noodles, where chewy housemade strands meet aromatic chili oil and ground pork, and wok-fried rice that balances smoky char with tender grains.

The restaurant’s concise menu reflects a deliberate focus on mastery rather than variety. By concentrating on fewer than two dozen items, Dan ensures consistency across its offerings, from translucent-skinned shrimp and chive dumplings to garlicky sautéed greens. This approach resonates with Pasadena’s discerning clientele, who appreciate the clarity of a menu designed to highlight technique rather than overwhelm with choices. The beverage program complements this ethos, with plans to expand into boba drinks and artisanal teas that mirror the kitchen’s balance of tradition and innovation.

Strategically located just 0.9 miles from the Pasadena Convention Center, Dan serves as both a neighborhood staple and a destination for visitors seeking refined yet approachable Chinese fare. Its expansion to Sawtelle and planned growth into Playa Vista and Manhattan Beach underscore its rising prominence, though the original Pasadena location remains a blueprint for success—a space where modern aesthetics harmonize with culinary heritage. Open daily until 9 PM, the restaurant accommodates everything from quick solo lunches to leisurely family dinners, with a team trained to guide diners through the nuances of soup dumpling etiquette or noodle-slurping techniques.

What sets Dan apart is its ability to bridge generations. Older patrons recognize the authenticity of recipes rooted in centuries-old traditions, while younger crowds gravitate toward the sleek presentation and Instagram-ready dishes. This duality manifests in details like minimalist tableware that lets food visuals shine and portion sizes designed for sharing without sacrificing elegance. As the brand grows, its Pasadena flagship continues to evolve, recently introducing dinner service to meet demand and experimenting with seasonal specials that keep regulars engaged.

For those seeking the soul of Chinese cuisine distilled through a modern filter, Dan Modern Chinese delivers an experience where every element—from the precisely pleated dumplings to the thoughtfully composed space—speaks to a reverence for craft. It’s a testament to how focused vision and culinary integrity can transform familiar flavors into something extraordinary, one steam basket at a time.

Ricardo was my waiter and it was my first time here. This place is a gem, the food is prepared fresh and with authenticity. Some people say you can’t taste or smell MSG, but I have a sensitivity to it, and I can say this place DOESN’T use MSG! This was something I deeply appreciate, and I take food serious, I enjoy experiencing culture via food and the people who serve it. This restaurant wasn’t too busy Saturday afternoon, to my surprise, but it should be hustling and bustling! I didn’t let this detour me, I lean on hidden gems mostly when I dine out. If you are in the area and looking for something new, and unique, or you are spending the morning at the Huntington Library/Museum and Botanical Garden like I was, (a short 7 minute drive through historic Pasadena/San Marino) try this true Chinese restaurant. The parking is directly across the way, they have a patio, and it’s nestled amongst other charming stores and restaurants. On weekends the location hosts local creatives markets, and music. I had the following increíble, well balanced and savory dishes: pork and chicken dumplings, vegetables fried rice (was very different in a delightful way!), chicken soup, three cup chicken, b

Their staff was incredible, they were very accommodating and attentive, expedited every need and were treating the service like pseudo fine dining despite it being relatively casual. The food was humble but flavorful with easy comfort food vibes. This definitely deserves a visit, excellent job!!!

By far the best Chinese restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of visiting! During my brief week in Los Angeles, this place was so good I had to have dinner here TWICE! The food tastes amazing, the prices are reasonable, the staff are very kind and attentive, and this was the only restaurant in the US where I found myself tipping above the recommended tip because they truly deserved it. If I ever come back to Pasadena I am absolutely dining here again!

Popped in waiting for my car to be fixed nearby. Carlos greeted me and made sure I was welcomed and comfortable. I ordered the Dan veggie noodles, chicken soup, and spicy tofu with jasmine hot tea. Friendly service and prompt. Give Carlos a raise because he’s too good to stay as a server.

I keep coming back for the veggies. The green beans and the seaweed with tofu is the best. Their knife-cut noodles with mushrooms have this fantastic smoky flavor—though the portion is a little small. Thankfully, you can swap in brown rice if you prefer. The Salt & Pepper Tofu is a standout—crispy on the outside without being overly breaded—and the Spicy Pork Dumplings are just the right level of heat. Pro tip: Parking is easier across the street if you’re cool with a short walk. Downside: They can be a little understaffed at times
